I talk to the creators of a new app called “Think Dirty” which claims to list all the ingredients found in your make-up. All you do is scan the bar-code on the product. We took the app out on TO streets and found some surprising results. Creators say they want people to be more educated and healthier consumers. But the industry association for cosmetic companies calls the app misleading. They say it should indicate how much or how little of harmful or toxic ingredients are in the products. While the app creators say at even trace amounts chemicals are chemicals. You be the judge. Here’s the video.

A touching Remembrance Day lesson for us all
70 odd years between the two, but you’d never know it… Just watch the interaction between a WWII Vet and an 11 year old girl as some of the most important life lessons of sacrifice and commitment are passed down. Watch the story here. This was from a week or two ago as the Royal Canadian legion launched it’s annual poppy campaign. These youngsters helped out and learned more than can ever be imagined. Lest we forget…
Porridge for Parkinson’s
Food, fun and all for Parkisnon’s. Most people with PD, are least active in the mornings. With this in mind, a low-key breakfast event was started a few years ago to fund-raise for Parkinson’s research. Through the groups efforts, over 1 million dollars has been collected for that all important search for a cure. I got to taste the fruits of their labour this year…literally. Some big Toronto chefs cooked-up a ton of porridge and I was happy to be attending, as the Parkinson Society Central and Northern Ontario Spokesperson! Hope this doesn’t make you too hungry! Video from Porridge for Parkinson’s 2013.

Battle Depression with Fitness…
Watch Michelle’s incredible and inspiring story here. The minute she began regular work outs she started on the road to recovery. Now she’s 100 pounds lighter; medication and depression free! She’s an example of what experts hope is a growing trend. Some we spoke to say mild mental health issues should and could be treated with exercise first, pills second.

Do you know what is growing on your cell phone?
I sure didn’t. In this unscientific study we (armed alongside a University of Guelph Microbiologist) took samples from 50 cell phones on the streets of Toronto. Turns out our gadgets are breeding grounds for germs, fecal matter, even medicine-resistant super bugs! Yuck. Watch this, then get the antibacterial wipes out!
Wigs…for Babies? Yup.
It’s exactly what it sounds like. Love it or hate this new infant accessory has parents we talked to up in arms, but we did find one big supporter. All you other expectant moms out there NEED to weigh in on this VIDEO. A head band, with hair on it, so that people know your bald baby girl is in fact a girl for those few months before her hair comes in. I guess you could say it’s a product for the little girl that has everything…but hair.
Can you say swoon? Get ready to have your heart melted…
Our entire newsroom fell in love with this little guy. And we are so thrilled that CityNews viewers rallied to support 1 year old Mackenzie and his parents as they fought to have his out-of-province eye surgery covered by the Ontario Government. Good news! You’ve spoken and the government has listened. Here’s the VIDEO on Mackenzie’s fight for sight, and first hand reaction from his family the day I met them. CityNews has been following his journey for the past year as he’s tried to overcome the rare eye condition he was born with (which only 3 kids in Ontario have). Oh, and did I mention he’s ADORABLE?!
